Antique English Silverplate Egg Cruet - Service for 4
$325.00
An example of the Victorian near-obsession of providing a proper method for serving each and every type of food, is the egg cruet. Sometimes referred to as an egg frame, this table item was created precisely for holding and efficiently serving boiled eggs to multiple diners at one time. The earliest known examples of the egg cruet date to the 1740s, but it was the Victorian era that saw the zenith of its design. The construction of an egg cruet consists of a stand for holding two to eight removable egg cups together with slots or hooks for supporting egg-spoons. This configuration is usually attached to a base plate with feet.
Although the Victorians were certainly responsible for elevating egg service with the elaborate silver cruet, the single egg cup had already been in use for millennia. A silver egg-cup preserved under lava and ash dating to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. was discovered among the ruins of Pompeii. Turkish mosaics found in the city also depicted dining scenes featuring the common use of eggcups.
Found at market in north east England, this lovely Antique English Silverplate Egg Cruet carries all the hallmarks of grand Victorian charm. Consisting of 4 individual egg cups on posts with 4 supports to hold matching fiddle head egg spoons, this regal set was produced in conjunction with fine silversmith, Naylor, Clark & Co, operating from Birmingham England's Caledonian Works in the 1880s. With a majestic frame showcasing a mirror finish platform surrounded by a grandly scalloped rim and gracefully shaped feet which elevate the cruet above the table, the base of the frame boasts expressive figures articulated at the foot of each individual cup. Rising above, a convenient carry handle also incorporates this sweet motif.
A distinguished yet playful way to enjoy the morning meal, this magnificent set also makes a striking impression when incorporated into seasonal decor displays. Especially meaningful when set on the spring holiday table with the decorated or dyed eggs common to many cultural traditions, this gleaming set promises to become a memorable part of celebrations to come. Versatile and majestic, we are certain this gorgeous and gleaming cruet will quickly assume its place among the most beloved pieces in your collection.
