Antique Silverplate Mosley Hotel Coffee Pot

With a humble beginning from two individual houses converted into a hotel around 1816, the Mosley Hotel Manchester grew to become one of Manchester, England's top hotels and a rival to the luxuriously grand Midland Hotel. With a prominent locale, it was advantageously suited for expansion when rail service arriving from London in 1830 created a burgeoning metropolis that has transformed over two centuries into the sprawling Manchester of today.
Recently discovered at auction not far from its origin, this stately Antique Silverplate Mosley Hotel Manchester Coffee Pot carries all the most desirable hallmarks of classic hotel silver. Upon demolition of its original buildings in 1891, construction on a new 7-story luxury hotel, lit by electricity, was begun. The updated Mosley included 80 rooms serviced by elevator, and gracious public amenities: a restaurant, coffee room open for ladies as well as gentlemen, ladies drawing room, gentlemen's reading room, smoking and billiard rooms and a grand banqueting hall. Perhaps the most innovative addition was the inclusion of a bank of 20 specially designed commercial rooms to service traveling salesmen and brokers, the earliest incarnation of what we now know as business travel.
Consigned through Lloyd, Payne & Amiel, under contract from the hotel to furnish silverwares for the new premises designed by architect John Harris Andrews, this imposing coffee pot is sidestamped with the hotel's regal crest. Produced by Sheffield's revered Atkins Bros. for Manchester design house and jewellers Lloyd, Payne & Amiel, this final incarnation of the Mosley with its dramatic gothic revival façade would remain in operation from 1894 until 1922.
With its long spout and cleverly vented carry handle designed to dissipate heat from the piping hot coffee, this sleek pot culminates in a handy hinged lid and spherical finial. Still gleaming with pride more than a century after the closing of this storied hotel, this majestic and gleaming pot continues to reflect a bygone era of elegant service and promises to infuse your home with elegant grace and refinement.
Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. 10.5"H x 10.5" from spout to handle.
