English Silverplate Champagne and Ice Bucket

Found at market in England, the buckets boast clean, classic silhouettes punctuated by solid raised side handles that ensure ease in transport to the bar, patio or sideboard. 

Stylishly at home within both traditional and more contemporary decor, these statuesque buckets were produced by the revered silversmiths at Birmingham England's Elkington & Co. Originally founded in 1836 and considered one of the most important silver producers of the 19th century, the firm was formed by George Richards Elkington and cousin, Henry Elkington. Produced by Elkington in 1879, the adorable petite bucket is an ideal size for keeping extra ice on hand or chilling a split or mini bottle. Sure to shine with special flair during cocktail parties, weekend brunch and holiday celebrations, this versatile pail can also be pressed into service as an elevated utensil holder for kitchen or bar. 

Created by Elkington in 1939 for London's Romanos restaurant, which originally gained fame in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, this larger, grand Silverplate Champagne Bucket is sure to have witnessed many a celebration in its time. Under the ownership of Alfonso Romano, a Russian restaurateur who catered to the elite, Romanos attracted a mix of socialites, actors, writers, aristocrats and even the Duke of Windsor (later Edward VII). With a rousing atmosphere tempered by the feel of a private club, W. Macqueen Pope in his "Ghosts & Greasepaint" memoir claimed "If you were an outsider visiting Romanos, you soon found out whether you belonged - or not." 

The restaurant was known for its lavish décor, high-quality French cuisine, vibrant social scene, live entertainment and reputation as a fashionable meeting place for the arts and theatre world. Sustaining substantial damage from World War II bombing raids during the Blitz beginning in 1940, the restaurant was forced to close its doors and with the 1945 death of Romano, did not reopen.
