First Surrey Rifles
Prize for Recruits
Presented by a Former Member
of No 3 Company
Won by

1878

The First Surrey Rifles was a volunteer unit within the British Army from 1859 until 1993. It was formed as part of the Volunteer Force, a national citizen army comprised of part-time rifle, artillery and engineer corps. Institued under Queen Victoria in 1859 in response to numerous threats of invasion from nations with which England was in conflict, the cause proved popular. National pride created huge enthusiasm for joining local volunteer corps with the First Surrey Rifle Volunteer Corps, also known as the South London Rifles, becoming one of the first units formed. Although the Volunteer Force was originally created to be a highly autonomous domestic force, units became increasingly integrated with the British Army and were called up to active duty in many military zones across the globe beginning in the late 19th century.

A lovely award created to recognize the marksmanship of a young recruit, this elegant prize most certainly held pride of place in a family home and remains an elegant and sophisticated memento. Sparkling with national pride across the decades, this richly storied military artifact is certain to bring its grand presence and British spirit to your collection.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very antique condition. Tankard measures 4.5"H x 5.25"W.
