Antique English Silverplate Covered Serving Dish

From marrow spoons and sweetmeat baskets to nutmeg graters and grape shears, the Victorian Era was a time when every item of food had its specific utensil, serving piece or means of presentation. Case in point: this lovely and sculptural Antique English Silverplate Rolltop Serving Dish.
This handsome piece has a refined aesthetic with an expertly executed series of graduated ridges flowing from a central point on the graceful lid towards a sturdy framed base incorporating cast handles and articulated feet. Held in place for secure transport to the table or sideboard by a clever key pin, the sophisticated rolltop-style lid opens to reveal a large central cavity. Designed to keep food warm by adding hot water into the lower dome, the retracted lid reveals two removable silverplate trays: a solid tray intended to rest above the hot water and another with decorative grating which sets above the solid tray as a surface for presenting food.
Sure to keep bacon tender and warm on a breakfast buffet, the punctuated upper tray is also perfect for serving asparagus, dinner rolls, or other side dishes. Supremely versatile for a variety of dishes, the vessel just below the upper grated surface serves as a handy well for meat juices below the upper tray. Removing this grated surface allows the larger vessel below to be employed for serving any manner of sides - from vegetables, to potatoes, to stuffing and even pasta. Adding ice instead of hot water creates cold serving options for salads or seafood.
Produced as a serving showpiece in the early 20th century by esteemed Sheffield, England silversmiths, Cooper Bros., this gleaming rolltop dish promises to become a much loved addition to your collection, bringing a polished presence to every gathering and a memorable focal point for your guests.
