Victorian Silverplate and Opaline Basket with Serving Spoon

Victorian Silverplate and Opaline Basket with Serving Spoon

$225.00

Just arrived from a silver market in northern England, this sweet and lovely Antique Silverplate and Opaline Basket is precious in every way. Richly appointed with exquisite details, its gleaming silverplate frame and serving spoon seem to sparkle from every angle. Set within the luxurious frame, an enchanting pearl-hued opaline basket seems to glow from within. With richly-hued, hand-applied enameling and painted effects that add playful dimension, rich shades of cornflower blue and ruby surround and highlight a single cut bloom of pale white and soft yellow.

Surrounding the central motif, a secondary floral theme comprised of primary colors and geometric shapes adds a subtle grounded sophistication to the bowl's overall aesthetic. Rising above, a graceful silver swing handle complements the gracious curve of the bowl and lower frame, while a gleaming pedestal brings elegance and stature to create the grand silhouette.

Produced by the fine silversmiths at Birmingham's Deykin & Sons in the early 1890s, the artisanship of this sparkling basket is made complete by inclusion of the original shovel-shaped spoon. Engraved in a romantic Victorian style, the playful scoop rests serenely within the basket, the tip of its handle cajoling "just one more scoop!" Splendidly ideal for berries, nuts, candies, bonbons, tea time pastries or pretty florals, this alluring pearlescent glass basket from a bygone era is certain to be a magnificent addition to your silver or tableware collection.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. Frame measures 6.25"H from rim to pedestal x 5.25 in diameter. Bowl measures 3.5"H x 4.5" in diameter. Spoon measures 5.25"L.

Learn More About Baskets

Decorative silver baskets for bread, cake, flowers or fruit became popular in England during the Georgian period, and continued to flourish during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. There were several reasons for their popularity: firstly, decorative silver baskets make excellent centerpieces. During the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras the wealthy and middle classes loved to throw dinner parties. Displaying silver tableware and centerpieces was a means of demonstrating their wealth and taste.

Secondly, during these dinner parties, the handles of baskets ensured food could be passed around the table by guests rather than being served by staff; especially shared foods - such as bread, fruit, cakes and sweet treats. Cake baskets in particular, typically had a rolled-back rim so the guests could see the delicious baked goods readily from the table.

Lastly, the more types of serving pieces included on the dinner table, the more cultured and knowledgeable you were perceived to be.
