Victorian Silverplate Engraved 3-Piece Travel Cutlery Set
$125.00
Set a dramatic stage for solo dining with this exquisite Victorian Silverplate Engraved 3-Piece Cutlery Set. Produced in Sheffield, England by the venerable John Round & Son silversmiths, the trio of individual flatware pieces remain snug in their original robin's egg blue, silk-lined presentation case. Originally used for travel, the set includes a lovely silverplate dining fork and spoon, along with an exquisite hand carved mother-of-pearl handled knife.
While it may seem excessive today, Victorians often traveled with their own flatware as a means of demonstrating wealth and social standing. Silverware was also believed to have antibacterial properties that could protect against disease. Traveling with one's own flatware offered a sense of security and hygiene, especially in an era before widespread sanitation.
Ideal for its intended purpose but also a fun conversation piece when employed for informal service at table or on a platter or board for entertaining, this smart set would have been a treasured status symbol for the distinguished traveler. With extensive engraving covering each piece, it is sure to be such a lovely addition to any silver collection that you may never leave home (again) without it!
Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. Handwash only to preserve condition, avoid soaking mother-of-pearl in soapy water. Presentation case measures 9" x 4". Fork measures 6.25"L, Spoon measures 6.25"L, Knife measures 8.25"L.
