$350.00
The egg cruet is a perfect example of the Victorian near-obsession with providing a proper method for serving each and every type of food. Sometimes referred to as an egg frame, this table item was created precisely for holding and efficiently serving boiled eggs to multiple diners at one time. The earliest known examples of the egg cruet date to the 1740s, but it was the Victorian era that saw the zenith of its design. The construction of an egg cruet consists of a stand for holding two to eight removable egg cups together with slots or hooks for supporting egg spoons. This configuration is usually attached to a base plate with feet.
Found at market in north-east England, this lovely Antique English Silverplate Egg Cruet, produced by the distinguished Sheffield firm Roberts & Belk, carries all the hallmarks of a grand example. Consisting of six individual egg cups on posts with six spoon slots (lovely vintage spoons paired to the set from the workshops of Gee & Holmes Ltd), this regal set is topped by a majestic rooster, just about to crow with delight at dawn. With a mirror-finish frame and gracefully rendered chicken feet that elevate the cruet above the table, the piece features handsome piercework and bead detailing.
A distinguished yet playful way to enjoy the morning meal, this magnificent set also makes a striking impression when incorporated into seasonal décor displays. Especially meaningful when set on the spring holiday table with the decorated or dyed eggs common to many cultural traditions, this silverplate cruet promises to become a memorable part of celebrations to come. Versatile and majestic, we are certain it will quickly assume its place among the most beloved pieces in your collection.
