Antique Belle Époque Sainte-Odile Souvenir Jewelry Box
$295.00
Lovingly selected from a summer market, this exquisite Antique Mont Sainte-Odile Souvenir Jewelry Box is a wondrously special find from France's grand Belle Époque. A popular cultural touchstone from the late 1800s through the 1920s, nostalgic and romantic trinket boxes in this beveled style served as lasting memories from once-in-a-lifetime visits to special places and landmarks.
This magnificent and rare beveled box is from the beloved Mont Sainte-Odile, a forested area within the Alsace region, most known for its historic abbey named for Sainte Odile, the patron saint of Alsace, who was born in the 7th century to the Duke of Alsace. According to legend, Odile was blind from birth, the shame of a father who desperately desired a male heir. He ordered his daughter put to death but was defied by Odile’s mother who spirited her away to a convent where her sight was miraculously restored by a bishop during baptism.
Stylishly standing confidently upon four legs supporting the thick octagonal paneled shape, the prisms of glass that comprise the gothic-inspired silhouette beautifully reflect light, illuminating the contents of the sweet box. With a hand-colored lid depicting a sweeping view of the abbey, the box's interior remains lined with the original tufted silk, now faded to a pale celadon. With its wonderful heritage and meaningful origin, we are confident this one-of-a-kind objet will grow to become a treasured keepsake for generations to come.
