Vintage Brass Cigarette Box

From an antique market in Northern England, these gleaming Vintage Brass Cigarette Boxes are always a treasured find. Produced exclusively for the State Express Cigarette brand, we like to think of these solid brass boxes as the perfect spot to safekeep cuff links, jewelry, playing cards or even hide the remote.

The lid edge of the larger rectangular box is finished with a subtle diamond pattern, reminiscent of a scale motif. The mahogany-lined interior contains 2 sections, separated by a divider. The smaller box features one larger section. The shining lids of both gleaming boxes retain their original clean finish with ample room to add bespoke engraving.

The iconic State Express logo makes an appearance understamped into the brass base of each box. A luxury line of cigarettes manufactured in the United Kingdom by the Ardath Tobacco Company, the brand was founded in London in 1896 by tobacco merchant Sir Albert Levy. The idea for State Express came to Levy while visiting the US as a passenger aboard the Empire State Express train, which broke the land speed record with its 'Queen of Speed' locomotive No. 999, the first vehicle to exceed 100 mph.

Levy subsequently registered the numerals 111 to 999 as trademarks for various tobacco blends in the UK. The most successful was the Virginia tobacco blend of State Express 555, which went on to become the company's flagship brand.
