Noted for their distinctive blue funnels, the Blue Funnel Line's ships were an integral part of Anglo-Asian trade for over 100 years. Founded in 1866 and operating merchant ships for 122 years, the Blue Funnel Line's ships connected the major ports of Shanghai and Hong Kong to Liverpool and boasted Chinese and European crews, primarily transporting cargo between England and Asia. Some of the Chinese seamen from these ships settled in Liverpool in the 1860s to found the oldest Chinese community in Europe. The company was also the first British shipping company to employ a female marine engineer in the 1920s, and supported the founding of Outward Bound to improve the survival chances of young seamen during World War II.
