An invention of the European bourgeoisie, napkin rings first appeared on tables in France around 1800 later spreading to countries in the western world. By the 19th century most napkin rings were made of silver or silver plate for durability, but many creative designs could be found in bone, wood, porcelain and glass. Occasionally called a "christening bangle", napkin rings were given as christening presents with the ring engraved with the initials of the newborn.
Used originally to identify the napkin users within a household where reuse was common between weekly wash days, rings were often engraved with numbers, initials or monograms to identify whose napkin was whose. As with most tablewares, the Victorian era saw napkin rings become beautifully detailed with openwork designs and lush engravings - jewelry for the table.
