Antique French Oak and Copper Wine Jug
Antique French Oak and Copper Wine Jug
$250.00
Found at an antiques market outside of Paris, we are charmed by the rustic elegance of this handsome and oh-so-rare Antique French Oak and Copper Wine Jug. With a wonderfully warm patina, the richly stained oak wood is beautifully complemented by clever and careful use of copper throughout - including bands that mimic those of a classic wine barrel, a distinctively formed pour spout, a decoratively detailed lid and a sturdy oak handle clad in lasting copper.
Originally used for serving wine, this pitcher is constructed just like an oak barrel used for storing wine. The slats of oak that form the body are not glued together, nor is there a water (or wine!) tight liner inside. Instead, the pitcher was designed to be filled with wine which would have caused the dense, tightly-grained oak to swell just enough and allow it to hold its precious liquid in a breathable vessel without leaking.
Coming to us from the early 1900s, this storied pitcher's oak body has spent more than a lifetime in service and is now best displayed empty with relaxed elegance on the kitchen counter or taking decorative pride of place on a sideboard, in a wine cellar or on a home bar. Wherever it is displayed, it is sure to bring its effortless French style and pedigree.
Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Circa 1910. Please note, the unlined pitcher is no longer water-tight and is intended for display only. In good antique condition with signs of age and use including three missing rivets along the top pour spout rim as shown in the alternate images. 8.5"H x 4.75" in diameter at its widest point.
