Vintage Howard Johnson's Restaurant Glass

Perfect for serving up fountain drinks, ice cream sodas, juices and other classic beverages, this Vintage Howard Johnson's Restaurant Glass is as fun as it is festive. Full of nostalgia, these charming souvenirs hail from some of the thousands of Howard Johnson's Restaurants and Motor Lodges that once dotted the U.S. from coast to coast. 

Two versions of the glass, with their varied silhouettes, feature the company's iconic "Pieman" logo. Originating from a 1930 design by artist John Eagles Alcott, the graphic outlines characters from the nursery rhyme Simple Simon. Commissioned by Howard Deering Johnson himself, this sweet motif became the face of the brand, appearing on roof weathervanes, menus, glass and tableware, ashtrays, swizzle sticks, matchbooks and more. One of the chain's most memorable logos, it showcases the Pieman, Simple Simon, and a cute little, hungry dog in search of a tasty pastry.

The tumbler's turquoise blue logo, called The Lamplighter, outlines a colonial-style figure lifting a pole to illuminate a street lamp. Designed to conjure feelings of safety, warmth, hospitality, and a place to rest for highway travelers, the Lamplighter theme was originally developed to welcome visitors to the company's motor lodges. In the 1950s, this charming character was combined with the Simple Simon figures into a specialized weathervane design for restaurants and motor lodges alike.

Tumbler measures 4.375"H x 2.875" in diameter. Fountain glass measures 5.125"H x 3.175" in diameter. Footed glass measures 5"H x 2.75" in diameter. Handwashing recommended to preserve logo decoration.
