"With Mind and Hand." So reads the Latin motto Mente Manuque, a sentiment celebrating the union of intellect and action that is perhaps best known today as the motto of Scotland's Clan Farquharson. Throughout Victorian Britain, family crests and mottos served as enduring symbols of heritage, character, and aspiration. Displayed on everything from silver to stationery, they proclaimed not only ancestry but also the ideals a family wished to uphold, lending even the most practical household objects a deeply personal significance.
Crafted during the early years of Queen Victoria's reign, this handsome English silverplate coffeepot is richly ornamented with exuberant scrollwork surrounding an engraved heraldic cartouche featuring a lion rampant beneath a banner bearing the motto Mente Manuque. The elegant form is complemented by a sweeping spout, finely cast handle, and beautifully detailed finial, while the crisp engraving remains remarkably fresh more than a century and a half after it was first executed.
Produced by the renowned London firm of Edward, Edward Jr., John & William Barnard, this exceptional coffeepot reflects the superb craftsmanship for which the Barnard family was renowned. Richly engraved, beautifully proportioned, and bearing its intriguing heraldic device, it is equally compelling as a decorative object, a collector's piece, or a functional addition to the tea or coffee table. Combining distinguished Victorian artistry with a fascinating glimpse into Britain's heraldic traditions, it promises to remain a treasured heirloom for generations to come.
