Ranging in tone from a pale robin's egg to a more brilliant French blue, each of these lovely opaque glass plates is elegant in the quiet simplicity of its color combined with a boldly articulated form and silhouette. 

With a design sensibility that remains fresh and timeless, each of these handsome plates makes a pretty presentation at table but becomes a striking work of art when arranged as a grouping. In very good vintage condition with slight wear to painted details, along with minute manufacturing flaws commensurate with milk glass production. Plate A measures 7.25" x 7.25". Plate B measures 8" in diameter. Plate C measures 8.25" in diameter. Plate D measures 7.25" x 7.25". Painted Dish E measures 9"W x 4.5"D.

Opaque Glass originated in 16th century Venice and came in a variety of colors, including white, pink, yellow, blue, and brown. The white variety beloved today rose to prominence during the Victorian era, when 
it was coveted as an economic dead-ringer for porcelain. (The Victorians also get credit for coining the term "milk glass.")

Its production and popularity waned during the Great Depression but saw a resurgence after World War II. During the 1950s and 1960s companies such as Anchor Hocking, Fenton, and Westmoreland increased production of milk glass pitchers, vases, plates and cake stands in all sorts of shapes and sizes to meet the demand for this timeless collectable.*
