Found at market in the north of England, we are pleased to present this handsome Silverplate 1 Pint Tankard from the Hotel Victoria Newquay.
Perched regally along the Cornish coast, the Hotel Victoria was a grand testament to the opulence and optimism of the late Victorian age. Designed by architect John Sansom—best known for his elegant ecclesiastical and civic works throughout Cornwall—the hotel rose under the skilled hands of builder C.R. Bellingham, its construction beginning in 1897 and triumphantly completed by the spring of 1899. With its ornate Gothic Revival architecture, stone-carved flourishes, delicate iron balconies, and a graceful glass-covered entrance cloister, the Victoria opened its doors to great fanfare on June 1st of that year—predating its rival, the Headland Hotel, by more than a year.
From the beginning, the Victoria catered to a clientele of refinement and leisure, offering suites of apartments for 100 guests and their accompanying staff. A marvel of modern convenience for its day, the hotel was heated by Spencer’s patent radiators and boasted an extraordinary feature: a lift that transported guests directly from every floor to the bathing beaches below—reputedly the only one of its kind in England.
