Tiele, known for his impressionist works set in Europe, the paintings depict two of the continent's most iconic cities - Paris and Venice. Focusing on cityscapes, street scenes, figures and monuments, Tiele has become highly collected in recent decades, following his death in the 1970s.

With works that are as accessible as they are evocative, his practice was to study each scene at length, creating different versions of the same vantage point in a variety of sizes - some oil on board and others oil on canvas. He was adept at blending color, texture and intentional brush strokes to create vivid texture.

Found together at market in France, each of these paintings presents an urban scene filled with palpable energy. In Paris, a striking daytime view of the Boulevard de Clichy, home to the famed Moulin Rouge; and in Venice, a picturesque angle takes in a grand canal with its vibrant gondolas looking towards the iconic Basilica Santa Maria della Salutei. Each painting is a memorable snapshot of a time gone by, captured through the loving eyes of a gifted artist.
