Found at market in the north of England, this whimsical piece transforms a simple table necessity into a gleaming work of seaside fantasy.

Beautifully fashioned in the form of a giant clam shell just beginning to open, the smooth and highly polished silverplate body rests upon a wonderfully detailed rocky seabed base strewn with shells and curling sea forms. A cleverly concealed hinged lid lifts to reveal the warming compartment within, while the shell’s dramatic curves and mirror-like finish catch and reflect the light beautifully from every angle.

Along with the host of serving dishes featuring hidden hot-water compartments designed to keep foods warm at table, spoon warmers in imaginative forms such as this were conceived for precisely the same purpose. Filled with hot water in the kitchen, they were brought to table with serving spoons nestled inside to maintain warmth until needed.
