Antique English Silverplate Epergne

Antique English Silverplate Epergne

$795.00

A most grand fashion in which to display cut blooms as well as fruit and even nuts and bon bons, the epergne as a decorative display dates to the mid-18th century. From the French épargner - meaning to save or preserve, the accessory is thought to have evolved from French dining custom in which the table's centerpiece held multiple components needed for dining. Crafted from crystal, porcelain or silver, an epergne served as the dramatic central focus for a perfectly set table and typically offered fruit, confectionery and candied sweets or what were called "sweetmeats," and later in its evolution, showcased flowers.

As aesthetic trends in the mid 19th century grew increasingly opulent, the epergne became an essential status statement for aspiring middle and upper class households who adorned their entry halls, sideboards and dinner tables with lavish arrangements. In the maximalist style for which the Victorian era was known, this clever vertical convention allowed one to produce abundant, beautiful displays in an efficient way, even with limited space. The size and shape of epergnes varied greatly - from smaller examples to larger, ornate pieces with added bowls in crystal or silver as well as designs that featured suspended baskets.

Found at market in England, this gleaming Antique English Silverplate Epergne consists of a central trumpet vase along with three removable, smaller matching vessels. Set within a graceful and magnificent base, the upper rim of each vase is accented by a lovely articulated shape which reinforces the graceful curves that playfully cascade towards the majestically elevated base. Rising from spherical bun feet, the epergne appears to magically float above the surface of the table, cajoling the eye upwards to its impressive display.

Produced by the highly esteemed James Deakin & Sons silversmiths of Sheffield, this gorgeous epergne promises to command attention even when filled with the most humble of stems. A striking addition to your dining table, buffet or sideboard, it is certain to become a prized showpiece within any silver collection.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. 16.5"H x 12.75" at widest point. Removable vases measure 6"L x 3.5" at rim.
