Antique Art Nouveau Vase Pair

One of our favorite finds this spring, we are smitten with the romantic, gleaming presence of this pair of magnificent Art Nouveau vases. Standing elegantly, the double gourd-shaped porcelain bases have been embellished with an openwork overlay of gleaming silver over a lapis blue background. Rimmed with open panes that gracefully dance around the surface, each vase has been further decorated with delicately hand-painted cherry blossoms.

The work of Czech sculptor, ceramist and designer, Josef Vinecký, this stunning vase pair was produced in conjunction with the Schwarzburger Werkstätten in the central German state of Thuringia. Founded in 1908 by the ceramic artist Max Adolf Pfeiffer, it remained in business through successive partnerships until 2006. Celebrated for the breadth and variety of his artistic output, Vinecký is considered one of the founders of what is now referred to as the avant-garde movement. 

Concentrating on the intersection of abstract, functionalist and early industrial design, Vinecký's later career was marked by the use of stone, bent metal tubes, wood veneer and early synthetic materials like plexiglass, polyester and trolon to create modernist furniture. He is recognized for his sacred interiors, sculpture, furniture and objets d'art. Celebrated and exhibited in his own time, Vinecký pieces remain in high demand by collectors today.

Embossed on the underside with the running fox impression of Schwarzburger Werkstätten and marked with the firm's 'U' and the style number '3009,' this lovely pair promises to become a treasured addition to your collection. Whether employed for a single stem, a hastily composed posy or displayed as sculptural art, these dramatic yet timeless vessels perfectly capture the organic and optimistic elegance of the Art Nouveau aesthetic.
