Victorian English Silverplate Milk and Sugar Set in Stand

From a lively market in northern England, we were delighted to find this lovely English Silverplate Milk and Sugar Set with its finely articulated silverwork. Gleaming with glamor in a smart silverplate stand that boasts a handsome carry handle, the set is elevated above the table by four adorable bun feet integrated into the caddy's base. With a dimensional organic design swirling around the visible perimeter, a less expected but equally exquisite design has been wrought into the underside of the milk jug and open sugar bowl. 

Crafted by expert makers at Roberts & Belk, which entered its first assay mark at Sheffield in 1864, this regal set dates from the late Victorian era when table setting was elevated to an art by exacting hostesses. Formed in 1863 with the addition of architect Charles Belk, who replaced retiring partner William Briggs, Roberts & Belk's origins date to 1810, transforming itself through a series of partnerships into a luxury silversmith with multiple showrooms in London.

With the magnificent silver exteriors contrasted by gleaming gold washed interiors, this heirloom-worthy pair is as practical as it is beautiful.
