Opening its doors in 1899 at the corner of State and Chapel Streets and known as the "Leading Hotel in Downtown Albany," the original 9-story Ten Eyck, would come to dominate the skyline of New York's state capital for much of the 20th century.
An immediate success, the grand Ten Eyck was designed to cater to the whims of even the most jaded traveler. Porcelain baths gleamed and towels were plush. A ballroom and well-appointed meeting rooms accommodated the rowdy conventions and corporate executives that flocked to the hotel in the early 20th century, seeking to do business with state lawmakers
Amenities at the Ten Eyck included a barbershop, hair salon, florist, telegraph office, and access to telephones. Scores of bell hops swarmed – ready to run any errand or fulfill the smallest of requests. Carriages transported travelers to and from the train station and Steamboat Square at no charge. The dining room and food was legendary – with specially made china and bespoke silver plate like this Antique Silver Ten Eyck Hotel Teapot.
Produced by Reed & Barton, this handsome teapot with its shapely finial bears the famed silversmith's mark and is bottom stamped with the hotel name. Executed in a lavish romantic style with articulated floral detailing on the spout, lower perimeter and shapely feet, this sparkling teapot incorporates many of the lovely qualities of Reed & Barton hotel servingware. Its hinged lid is incorporated within the design to cleverly ensure lid and pot remain together and its handle boasts integrated insulating rings to shield the pouring handle from the intense heat of the piping hot beverage within.
Until its closing in 1968, the Ten Eyck continued to be Albany's hotel of choice for presidents as well as the rich and famous. With its proximity to the Capitol Theater, just around the corner, celebrated guests included everyone from Lionel Barrymore to George M. Cohan to Flo Ziegfeld, accompanied by the luminous showgirl cast from his Follies. Most assuredly witness to many exciting events and clandestine conversations, this lovely teapot from one of America's historic hotels is certain to become a beloved addition to your silver or hotelware collection.
