With a sense of timeless English charm, this elegant soup tureen from Davenport & Co. brings a stately beauty to the table. Produced in the handsome Canton pattern and rendered in rich brown transferware, the piece, dating to the 1840s, is a gorgeous centerpiece for any table.
Founded in 1794 by John Davenport in Longport, Staffordshire, Davenport & Co. quickly rose to prominence among Britain’s most successful early potteries. Drawing inspiration from innovators like Josiah Wedgwood and Josiah Spode, Davenport combined technical mastery with business acumen to create earthenware, stone china, and porcelain of exceptional quality. His early wares—cream-colored earthenware with classical shapes and delicate Chinoiserie or floral motifs—proved both affordable and refined, earning wide popularity at home and abroad.
By the early 1800s, Davenport had expanded operations to include additional factories, warehouses, and even glassmaking ventures. His success won him influential patrons, including the Prince of Wales, and a seat in Parliament in 1832. Under the involvement of his sons Henry and William, the company continued to flourish through the 1830s, producing bone china and ornamental porcelain that reflected the changing tastes of the era—from neoclassical restraint to the more elaborate Rococo revival.
Perfect for serving a comforting soup, stew, or simply displayed with pride, this tureen brings a touch of English heritage to every meal.
