Founded in 1794 by John Davenport in Longport, Staffordshire, Davenport & Co. quickly rose to prominence among Britain’s most successful early potteries. Drawing inspiration from innovators like Josiah Wedgwood and Josiah Spode, Davenport combined technical mastery with business acumen to create earthenware, stone china, and porcelain of exceptional quality. His early wares—cream-colored earthenware with classical shapes and delicate Chinoiserie or floral motifs—proved both affordable and refined, earning wide popularity at home and abroad.

By the early 1800s, Davenport had expanded operations to include additional factories, warehouses, and even glassmaking ventures. His success won him influential patrons, including the Prince of Wales, and a seat in Parliament in 1832. Under the involvement of his sons Henry and William, the company continued to flourish through the 1830s, producing bone china and ornamental porcelain that reflected the changing tastes of the era—from neoclassical restraint to the more elaborate Rococo revival.
