Vintage Jean Babou Wine Key

Found at a picturesque streetside market on our most recent trip to Paris, this sparkling Vintage Jean Babou Wine Key hails from one of France’s first designated appellations—Limoux. Classified in 1938 and located in the Pyrenean foothills of southern France's Languedoc region, Limoux is the true birthplace of the winemaking style for which Champagne is so revered. The creation of a refreshing sparkle through a secondary fermentation within the bottle (as opposed to a tank or barrel) was first recorded in 1531 by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire in Limoux more than 150 years before its use in Champagne.

The monks called the novel wine produced with this method blanquette from the word blanqueta in the local dialect, meaning 'the small white,' referring to the appearance of the diminutive and indigenous Mauzac grape, the dominant varietal in the blend. Synergistically drawing from the distinct climate benefits of the Mediterranean to the east and the temperate coastal conditions of the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the region receives an ideal amount of sunshine and rainfall distributed throughout the year. Combined with a rich diversity of terroir, these conditions ensure grapes ripen beautifully while preserving acidity, an essential component of sparkling wine.

This clever wine key has been crafted in the form of a charming wine bottle. Creative etching brings additional dimension to lively cork and decorative neck details. With a comforting, warm patina gained over decades of celebrations, the smooth steel opener is also stamped with the name of the domaine of Jean Babou and its signature blend, La Blanquetta de Limoux. Originally produced as a branded tool for promotional use, this handy opener is equipped with an extending worm and fulcrum, as well as an optional folding knife for removing foil and other packaging elements that may obscure access to the cork.
