Victorian Silverplate Pint Tankard

Victorian Silverplate Pint Tankard

$150.00

Found at market in the north of England, we are pleased to present this handsome Victorian Silverplate Pint Tankard. Primarily used for serving beer or ale, and designed to hold about 20 fluid ounces of liquid, tankards served as a standard measure in British pubs and taverns. Subject to capacity regulation to ensure the appearance of portion fairness and consistency and made in a variety of designs and styles, the tankard underwent many incarnations during its early evolution. From plain and functional to ornate and decorative, vessels were produced from a variety of materials from earthenware to glass, stoneware, pewter and other metals.

A recognizable stalwart of social drinking settings, patrons would often provide their own tankards, sometimes personalized with name or initials, to the local pub to be filled with beer directly from the tap. So central to daily life was the tankard that many establishments maintained designated shelves or areas to store the tankards of regular customers when not in use.

Produced during the Victorian era by Walker & Hall with a date mark for 1887, this striking tankard is a stately specimen, complete with a series of engravings, markings and hallmarks. On the front side, a cascading banner with the motto 'De Bon Vouloir Servir Le Roi' (To Serve the King with Good Will) floats above a regal tower. On the reverse, an early capacity mark features a simple crown and 'VR' (Victoria Regina) with 'One Pint', indicating the official measure. The grouping is completed by the number 37, corresponding to the region of Sheffield as the location of the local measure verification authority. The underside of the tankard showcases hallmarks from the silvermaker as well as intended production for 'The Queen's Restaurant'.

Sparkling with good cheer and camaraderie from across two centuries, this gleaming tankard with its rich history is sure to have been a meaningful family heirloom passed down through generations. For savoring a special brew solo or celebrating with a friend, this remarkable find with its storied provenance is certain to become a treasured addition to your collection.

Strictly limited and subject to prior sale. At listing a total of two tankards are available. 5"H x 4.75".
