Victorian dining etiquette dictated that each and every food have its proper serving method and specific serving utensil. During the Victorian era there were no multi-purpose, "one-size-fits-all" serving pieces and a well-stocked butler's pantry indicated the social place of the family. Case in point is the pickle jar (also referred to as a castor). Not only did pickle castors convey status during the 19th-century, they connoted one’s power to have servants. Household kitchen staff were responsible for preparing and preserving the jar’s contents (pickled produce) then using it to display the fruits of their labor.
We are delighted to present this impeccable Victorian Silver and Glass Double Pickle Castor with Tongs in its original caddy. Produced by Rogers Smith & Co. of Meriden at the turn of the last century, this superb set was hand-crafted incorporating a lovely array of design details.
The shining frame sits upon four articulated feet, each adorned with a background of ivy from which emerges a formidable foliate mask of the "Green Man," representative of the vegetative bounty to be found within the upper jars. Framing the entire scene, ivy and fern leaves with petite buds encircle the lower portion of the castor with its gleaming vessels. Etched in a cube motif and interspersed with miniature sunbursts, each weighty jar is topped by a beautiful lid and regal finial in the shape of an acanthus leaf. Around the perimeter of each lid, sumptuous fans open wide while the lower portion of the shaped jar remains securely set within the gleaming frame. Between the jars, a slender carry handle rises majestically.
Further elevating this magnificent set, the original hand-honed tongs float upon their shapely hook, suspended between the exquisite jars. Punctuating either end of the tongs, a gothic claw emerges from the handle while sweet rosettes are positioned above at a convenient distance to easily grasp and maneuver the tongs. This ingenious design not only assists in capturing each jar's delectable contents, it helps to ensure that one's very best table manners (and dignity!) are preserved.
We can't think of a more delightful way to enjoy pickled niceties on the table and are confident that this stunning serving piece will become a much coveted addition to your silver collection.
