Found at market on our latest buying trip to Paris, we are so pleased to offer these gorgeous antique miniature portraits that capture the romance and beauty of early 19th century France. Exquisitely hand-painted in gouache with fine details, the portraits are framed in richly stained wood with gilt accents. 

In a time before photography, miniature portraits were often an intimate gift given within the family as a means to keep an image of loved ones close. Particularly popular among the nobility and gentry of England and France (as well as sweethearts and soldiers), miniatures could be produced in surprising petite sizes. More micro than miniature, tiny portraits were often executed within to fill keepsake lockets, watch cases and even set into a ring or bracelet.
