Antique French Matchstrike
Antique French Matchstrike
SOLD
A winsome and handsome Art Nouveau find from the markets of France, this Antique Match Strike once served as a promotional piece provided to bistros and cafés. Produced for Reinette Absinthe of Reims, France, it was used to promote the brand alongside their clever slogan 'Reine de Absinthes' (Queen of Absinthes).
Perhaps no beverage helped define the Belle Époque more than absinthe. It was a popular, high-proof, wormwood-based French spirit, known for its bohemian association with artists, before being banned in 1915 due to an alleged hallucinatory effect. So popular was absinthe throughout the mid 19th century, that by the 1860s, 17:00 (5:00 PM) was known as l'heure verte (the green hour), the ritual gathering hour to partake in this dazzling, emerald green-colored spirit.
With its Nouveau-style lettering applied in a playful green reminiscent of the color of the spirit itself, this charming matchstrike undoubtedly helped keep Absinthe Reinette top of mind. Light a match in true fashion with ease by simply striking a strike anywhere match along the unglazed match holder that rises from the center of the gleaming white base. With its smart design and handy function, this lucky find is sure to become a focal point in the bar, study or entry hall, serving matches with elegant antique style for generations to come.
Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. Strike anywhere matches not included. In very good antique condition. 4 1/4" x 4 1/2".
