Georgian Matthew Boulton Silverplate Urn

Georgian Matthew Boulton Silverplate Urn

$1,295.00

A wonderful surprise find at market in the north of England, this stunning Antique Silverplate Grand Urn elegantly shimmers from every angle. Beautifully crafted by silversmith Matthew Boulton (both the body and the lid feature his distinctive hallmark), its graceful silhouette epitomizes a bygone era of gracious hospitality. A crowning finial enhances this urn's majestic presence, while a stylish center spigot and release handle stand ready to serve.

Once commonplace in stately homes, urns of this lovely condition and ample capacity have become increasingly scarce. Most often used today for keeping brewed coffee or tea at serving temperature, these antique finds are sure to have enjoyed a rich social history - privy to all manner of midnight buffets, clandestine weekend encounters, family gossip and joyful milestone celebrations.

Yet perhaps even more impressive than the piece itself is the story of its maker, Matthew Boulton. Brilliant, ambitious, and endlessly inventive, Boulton helped turn Birmingham into the workshop of the world. The son of a small-scale metalworker, he inherited his father’s trade and transformed it into something extraordinary. In 1762, he founded the Soho Manufactory, a dazzling complex that became a beacon of British industry and design. Here, artistry met precision—buttons gleamed, candlesticks shone, and elegant ormolu ornaments found their way into the finest drawing rooms of Europe. Among his many firsts, Boulton was the earliest silversmith in Birmingham to hold an official hallmark (a coin toss at the Crown & Anchor pub determined that Birmingham would be the anchor and Sheffield the crown). His silver and silverplate tableware are celebrated for their impeccable craftsmanship and refined neoclassical taste.

Boulton's accomplishments spread far beyond silver: When he joined forces with engineer James Watt, their improved steam engine helped drive the Industrial Revolution itself, powering mills, mines, and dreams alike. Later, his Soho Mint brought artistry and accuracy to British coinage, each piece struck by the power of steam. A founding member of the Lunar Society, Boulton moved in luminous company—Darwin, Wedgwood, and other men of science and imagination.

Sure to make a lovely impression on the sideboard and eager to attend your next holiday brunch or garden party, this lasting piece of classic English silver by a renowned English historical figure still radiates with its certain sparkle, pledging loyal service for years to come.
