Found at a silver market in the north of England, we are dazzled by this magnificent Antique Silverplate Grand Serving Tray. No stranger to presentation, this majestic, generously-sized tray is adorned with a series of intricately detailed borders that encircle the perimeter and flow seamlessly to the ample carry handles. Created by the expert artisans at Sheffield's Boardman & Glossop, working as silversmiths, electroplaters and Britannia metal-smiths at Sheffield's Clarence Works with additional premises in London until 1924, the tray gleams with a combination of garland, geometric, and foliate patterns that capture the lush aesthetic of the Victorian era. The underside of the tray features a Boardman & Glossop mark in combination with two additional marks for EP and GS. An older mark referring to 'German Silver,' predating the more familiar term NS for 'Nickel Silver, the presence of GS helps date this tray to the mid Victorian era.
