Victorian Silverplate Wine Ewer

Sparkling at every turn with brilliantly gleaming silverplate, we are pleased to present this magnificent Antique Silverplate Wine Ewer in all its stately glory. Gracefully imagined and elegantly designed, this special pitcher was found at a silver market in the north of England.

Produced by the esteemed Elkington & Co. supplier of tableware to the British Royal and innovator of the electroplating process and techniques such as "old Sheffield plate," this lovely ewer with its flowing and organic shape carries a date mark for 1874. First appearing in the 17th century as vessels for serving water - either drinking water or water for finger-washing, ewers began to be used for serving wine towards the end of the 18th century.

Both functional and decorative, this exquisite pitcher also known as a claret jug, has a pleasing silhouette with its dramatic curved spout and hinged lid. An artful finial and lavishly executed handle with leaf motif are cleverly juxtaposed by a more deliberate and weighty base surrounded by vertical articulations artfully stretching from the lower edge, tapering more closely together towards the more delicate neck. 

Appearing as a staple on the tables of wealthy Victorians, ewers allowed ample space for a uncorked wine to breathe while also preserving a measure of taste and quality from the time of the decanting until being served at table by an attendant.  Whether serving wine, water or other beverage for yourself or your guests, this statuesque Silverplate Wine Ewer promises to be a majestic addition to your sideboard, tablescape or bar.
