Victorian dining etiquette dictated that each and every food have its proper serving method and specific serving utensil. During the Victorian era there were no multi-purpose, "one-size-fits-all" serving pieces and a well-stocked butler's pantry indicated the social place of the family. Case in point is the pickle jar (also referred to as a castor). Not only did pickle castors convey status during the 19th-century, they connoted one’s power to have servants. Household kitchen staff were responsible for preparing and preserving the jar’s contents (pickled produce) then using it to display the fruits of their labor. The craze for these specialized items lasted far longer than the Victorian era, as evidenced by this elegant double pickle castor dating to the mid-1920s.
Found at market in England, this charming set features a duo of etched glass jars, elegant scrolling silverplate stand with convenient carrying handle made by the esteemed silversmiths at Walker & Hall circa 1925, and is certainly the most delightful of ways to enjoy pickled niceties on the table. We confident that this lovely serving piece will become a much coveted addition to your silver collection.
