Antique Silverplate 1902 Union Castle Line Pitcher

Antique Silverplate 1902 Union Castle Line Pitcher

$450.00

With their distinctive lavender hulls and striking red and black funnels, the great "Castle" ships of the Union-Castle Line proudly sailed between Great Britain and South Africa for over 70 years.

The company was formed in 1900 when the Union Steamship Company merged with the Castle Packet Company.  Both shipping companies were operating mail service to South Africa and eventually joined forces to form the Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company.  The company would famously name their ships with the "Castle" suffix, such as Balmoral Castle, Dover Castle, Edinburgh Castle and the beloved Windsor Castle.  The Union-Castle Line was known for its speed and efficiency and would promptly depart Southampton every Thursday at 4:00pm for Cape Town.

Although it's charter began primarily for mail delivery, the Union-Castle ships offered both First Class and Tourist accommodations and enticed thousands of British tourists to escape the gray chill of winter for the sunny warmth of the South African Cape Colony:

"The 6000 mile journey to or from South Africa can be a leisurely, refreshing holiday in itself. You sail, in the main, through warm, sunlit seas. It's relaxation and enjoyment all the way, backed up, of course, by the traditional, friendly Union-Castle service."

Elegant dining rooms, sparkling swimming pools, moon-lit dances outdoors on deck - a Union-Castle voyage captured the carefree joy of ocean travel.

Found at market in the north of England, this handsome Antique Silverplate Covered Pitcher was produced exclusively for use aboard the great Union-Castle ships. With a grand stature and well-balanced design to ensure stability even at high sea, this stately pitcher is beautifully side-marked with the Union-Castle crest. Produced by Britain's venerable Elkington Silversmiths, the pitcher is date code stamped with its year of manufacture: 1902. With its historic provenance, this magnificent pitcher is certain to be a gleaming addition to your silver collection.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. 10"H x 7.5" in diameter.

Learn More about Hotel Silver

Once found in Grand Hotels, chic cafés, elegant restaurants as well as luxury steamships and the dining cars of the great locomotives, vintage hotel silver beautifully evokes the Golden Age of Travel. Enduringly crafted using sturdy nickel silver as its base metal and coated with a thick plating of pure, gleaming silver, vintage hotel silver is unmistakeable for its simple, classic lines and its pleasing heft. Often crested with the name of the establishment, the pieces bear the gentle, lovely patina often referred to as a “butler’s finish”.

Produced by the great silversmiths here in the United States, as well as those in Britain and on the Continent, most hotel silver dates from the 1920s to the 1940s. Prized for its perfect blend of form and function, hotel silver was made to withstand the rigors of daily use. Highly collectible, vintage hotel silver is a wonderful addition to any home.

Evoking the days of elegant travel, there are many new ways that hotel silver can be enjoyed. A milk pitcher or sugar basin makes an elegant vase for flowers or fresh herbs on the kitchen counter. A collection of oval platters adds sparkle and depth in a hutch when not being called into service for a buffet or dinner party. A toast rack becomes the perfect way to display photographs, hold fingertip towels in a powder room or organize mail in the office. Mix and match cutlery brings a relaxed sophistication and elegance to any tablescape. Whatever the piece, vintage hotel silver is sure to stir memories not only of your own travels, but of exotic destinations and ports of call from parts unknown.
