"The clamorous owl that nightly hoots and wonders at our quaint spirits." ~ William Shakespeare
With his wide, watchful eyes and wonderfully inquisitive expression, this charming Vintage Limoges Owl Trinket Box is a delightful example of the centuries-old French tradition of transforming even the smallest objects into miniature works of art.
Made and painted by hand in Limoges, France, the diminutive porcelain box takes the form of a handsome owl perched attentively upon a softly shaded green base. Delicate brushstrokes articulate every feather in warm shades of cream, tawny brown, and black, while bright, wonderfully expressive eyes give our feathered friend an irresistible personality. An ornate antiqued brass mount encircles the box, opening to reveal a tiny hidden compartment within.
Limoges trinket boxes trace their history to the small, exquisitely decorated hinged boxes that became fashionable in France during the 18th century. Created to hold the diminutive treasures and necessities of daily life—from snuff and beauty patches to tiny keepsakes and love tokens—these labor-intensive little objects became prized for the extraordinary craftsmanship lavished upon their miniature forms. Over the centuries, their uses evolved, but their romance and charm happily endured.
Long associated with wisdom and watchfulness, the owl makes an especially enchanting keeper of tiny treasures. Perfect for holding a favorite ring, a tiny note, or another precious keepsake, this wonderfully characterful Limoges box is just the sort of little object destined to be treasured for years to come.
