Learn More About the British Postal Service

The origins of the British postal service date to the reign of King Henry VIII, who established the Royal Mail in 1516 for official government correspondence. In 1635, under King Charles I, the postal system was opened to the public, and by 1660 the General Post Office had been established, laying the foundation for a centralized national network. By the 18th century, mail coaches connected towns throughout Britain, though postal rates remained expensive and complicated, often calculated according to distance and the number of sheets enclosed in a letter.

One of the most important early innovations was the London Penny Post, founded in 1680 by merchant William Dockwra. For the cost of a single penny, letters could be delivered throughout London through an organized system of receiving houses and sorting offices. The success of the Penny Post demonstrated that affordable, efficient mail delivery on a large scale was possible.

The British postal service was transformed again in 1840 with the introduction of the Uniform Penny Post, championed by Sir Rowland Hill. His reforms created a simple prepaid rate of one penny for letters sent anywhere within Britain and introduced the Penny Black, widely recognized as the world’s first adhesive postage stamp. Letter writing quickly expanded across all levels of society, and the British system became a model for postal reform around the world. By the early 20th century, the Post Office had grown into one of Britain’s largest and most important public institutions, carrying millions of letters each year and serving as an essential link between households, businesses, and the wider British Empire.
