Antique English Copper Lusterware Tea Set

Antique English Copper Lusterware Tea Set

$240.00

Lusterware has long been prized for its beautiful iridescence and the way it captures the light. Examples of pottery decorated with metallic glazes can be found in the Middle East as far back as the 9th century. The technique eventually made its way to Europe and by the 19th century lusterware was in full production with the potteries of England leading the way.

Copper lusterware was particularly popular during the Victorian era as gaslight was first being introduced into the homes of the wealthy. It was fashionable to arrange groupings of copper lusterware on a mirrored platform in the center of the dining room table below the chandelier. The gaslight above accentuated the lustrousness and created a rich, warm ambiance - sure to impress the guests at a dinner party.

From England, we are under the lustrous spell of this charming and rare Antique Copper Lusterware Tea Set. Comprised of a handsome teapot with matching underplate trivet, as well as a generously-sized sugar and creamer, brilliant cobalt bands around the perimeter of each piece are embossed and hand-painted with a pretty pastoral scene. Marked 'England Made', the lid of the wide sugar bowl and the  majestic teapot are embellished in same motif while the addition of a fine bead border around the trivet, sugar bowl lid and upper portion of the milk jug adds additional dimension. The bowl and creamer are also enhanced by stacked ribbing at the base of each piece and elegant, wing-like dramatic articulated handles.

Whether impressively showcased as a set, used for special occasions or employed for impromptu floral array, this stunning trio is sure to add a gleaming touch of lustrous charm wherever it is displayed.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. Teapot measures 5.5"H x 8"; Trivet measures 1"H x 6.25" in diameter; Sugar Bowl measures 3.75"H x 6.5" in diameter; Creamer measures 4.75"H x 5.5" in diameter at widest point.
