Antique French Glass & Wicker Flask

Intricately covered in finely woven wicker, this Antique French Glass & Wicker Flask was spotted a few weeks ago in France by a discerning eye. Dating from the early 20th century when gentlemen would carry a little nip to ensure hearty constitution while out on the town, this pumpkin seed-shaped stunner still boasts its original pewter screw-top cap.

Constructed of an inner glass bottle fit with a sturdy pewter neck and then covered in woven, soft fibrous straw, this handsome vessel would have conveniently slipped into a hip or breast pocket for easy access. Smartly designed with an eye equally attuned to form and function, the plaited wicker not only created an easily graspable surface, it also acted as a protective layer shielding the fragile glass from mishaps that could be caused by unsteady hands.

The flask's 'ED.' marking on the cap refers to the maker or patent holder, whose full name is now sadly lost to the annals of time. The accompanying stamp 'Bte SG. DG', was a common abbreviation used to convey the warning "Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement“ a broad yet unofficial French patent classification. Meaning "without government guarantees", this patent type shielded the French government from product liability and was in use until the 1960s.
