Driven by the Industrial Revolution and Imperial ambitions, Great Britain truly was the kingdom that "launched a thousand ships" during the Victorian era. Sailing to the most far-flung corners of the globe, one could be confident to find an ocean-faring vessel flying the Union Jack in virtual every port on earth.
Found at market in England, we are proud to offer these exceptional antique ironstone soup bowls produced exclusively for the now-defunct Mossgiel Steamship Company. Incorporated in Scotland in 1894, the Mossgiel Steamship Co. quickly built its fleet transporting goods first to ports across the Mediterranean and later to the West Indies and Venezuela. As was common, the steamship company also carried a small number of passengers in addition to its cargo.
These classic rim soup bowls were produced by the potters at A. Sneddon & Sons, Ltd in Glasgow. The handsome bowls are decorated with thin cobalt blue bands and 'The Mossgiel Steamship Company' name within a furled banner along with the company's house flag. Having sailed the seven seas, these storied bowls are certain to provide elegant service in your home much as they did onboard the ships of The Mossgiel Steamship Co.
Bowls sold individually. Strictly limited quantities (at listing, a total of 3 bowls are available) and subject to prior sale. In good antique condition. 8.25" in diameter.
