Found at market in Paris, we were thoroughly charmed and intrigued by these handsome vintage Italian ex votos.
Ex votos—derived from the Latin ex voto suscepto, meaning “from a vow made”—are devotional offerings left in shrines, given as a gesture of gratitude or devotion in fulfillment of a vow, after a close shave, cured illness, or dangerous accident. Traditionally crafted from humble materials such as wax, silver, or wood, they take the form of hearts, body parts, ships, or small painted plaques. They were particularly popular from the 17th through the 19th centuries in France, Italy, Spain, and Mexico.
Whether used for your own devotion or as a handsome decorative object with deep meaning, each of these ex votos commemorates an important moment and is certain to bring its deep meaning of hope and deliverance to any setting.
