Antique English Silverplate Tea Service

Adorned in gleaming silverplate with a dramatic silhouette, this Antique Edwardian Silverplate Tea Service is at once delicate, curvaceous and bold. With prominent carry handles that stylishly extend from each vessel, the handsome pot, milk jug and open sugar bowl create an elegant impression. The sleek lines and pert, rounded forms of this lovely set are elevated above the table on a set of pretty diminutive feet. Adding to the magnificence, the striking handgrip of the exquisite pot has been expertly covered in a custom-stitched, richly textured leather that insulates the hand from high heat while pouring. 

Produced by Sheffield England silversmiths Lee and Wigfull, operating from both the city's John Street Works as well as Charlotte Street works, this compact set dates from the first decade of the 20th century during the reign of England's Edward VII. Known as a 'bachelor set,' the size of a scaled-down service allowed single individuals, apartment residents, and travelers to enjoy afternoon tea or breakfast in private without the employ of domestic staff. As urbanization surged during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, smaller households and independent living became more common, increasing demand for serving pieces like these on a more moderate scale.
