Tennent’s Lager is Scotland’s best-selling beer and has been made with pride in the heart of Glasgow since 1885 - but is famous far beyond its home city. Scotland is a nation famed for its creativity and innovation, and when you think of "Great Scots", the Tennent family of brewers is certainly one of them.

Found at market in England, a rare, vintage ashtray produced exclusively for Tennent's Beer. Hand-crafted in Glasgow by the historic Possil Pottery - a pottery company that was owned by Tennent's and once supplied the brewery with stoneware bottles, the sturdy ashtray boasts a distinctive shape and bears the Tennent's name along with their emblematic red "T".

Learn More About Tennent's Lager

To tell the story of Tennent's you have to go all the way back to 1556 when Robert Tennent, who believed “this place is perfect for brewing beer”, established a brewery in Glasgow. The Tennent family continued their tradition of brewing for generations, although brewing on a commercial basis only started in 1740 when two Tennent brothers, Hugh and Robert, established the H&R Tennent partnership. At that point, they were the sixth generation of the Tennent family to be involved in brewing.

It was under Hugh and Robert’s stewardship, in the 18th century, that the first recorded export of Tennent’s to America took place. In 1797, they sent consignments of ale, which were high in strength in order to withstand the long voyage, to expatriate Scots and by 1860, the firm became the world’s largest exporter of beer.

Following their growing success, Tennent's iconic Red T logo is registered as a trademark across the British Empire in 1867 and goes on to become a symbol of "home" to every Scottish person that sees it.

In the 1880s, during a trip in Bavaria, Hugh Tennent developed a passion for the lighter, sparkling beer of the region – referred to as ‘German beer’ or lager. He wasted little time with the first bottles of Tennent’s lager rolling off the production line in 1885. The local press dubbed the success of his lager “a madman’s dream” as it contrasted to the darker, heavier ales that Scotland was accustomed to.

Today, the Tennent’s Lager recipe remains true to the one introduced by Hugh more than 130 years ago, using 100% Scottish barley, the finest Herkules hops and the fresh water of Loch Katrine. It is quite simply Scotland’s favorite beer.
