Vintage Stueben Crystal Decanter

Vintage Stueben Crystal Decanter

For 120 years, Steuben has been the most celebrated name in American art glass. From its vividly colored Art Nouveau and Asian-style wares produced in the early 1900s to the mid-century modernist works rendered in flawlessly clear crystal, Steuben is renowned for producing glass of striking beauty and delicacy.

Taking its name from the county it is located in, Steuben glassworks began in 1903 when Thomas Hawkes, a glass engraver, and Frederic Carder, an English glassmaker struck up a partnership. Hawkes wanted a factory to make crystal blanks for his highly successful crystal cutting and engraving company. Carder, disillusioned at not being appointed Artistic Director of the famed Stevens and Williams Glass Works in England, wanted a factory where he could design, develop and produce highly artistic glass.

This new venture would go on to become America's most revered art glass company, making notable appearances in exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre, the National Museum of Art, the Toledo Museum of Art, and more. Steuben set the table inside the glass-walled "House of Tomorrow" at Chicago's 1933 Century of Progress Exposition and, with important pieces like the Stueben Olive Dish at the 1939 New York World's Fair, showcased what would become their signature style: monumental bowls whose single decorative flourish was their handles. In 1940, Steuben commissioned the landmark exhibition “27 Artists in Crystal”, featuring designs by legendary artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Henri Matisse and Salvador Dalí.

Steuben pieces became the gift given by our nation's presidents to heads of state around the world including Queen Elizabeth II, the Shah of Iran and Emperor Hirohito of Japan.  Steuben's beautiful sculptures, figurines, crystal glassware, vases and bowls are highly sought after by collectors the world over.
