Antique French Floral Plates - Set of 4
Antique French Floral Plates - Set of 4
Recently arrived from our market days in and around Paris, this precious set of Antique Floral Plates brings to mind the sweet romance of early 20th century France. With lovely and feminine details, each of these rimmed plates has been decorated with a stylized rose surrounded by a pretty spray of leaves. An early form of stencil transfer executed in an early European spritzdekor style, the variations within the hand-applied raspberry rose hue create dimension and a fluid sense of movement within the design. Adding to the understated drama of this lovely set, the octagonal silhouette of the plates has been rimmed with a solid border.
A German term, spritzdekor, refers to a spray ("spritz") application on ceramics most often produced in Germany, Czechoslovakia and Belgium. With motifs often echoing the Modern Movement, now seen as a reaction to the romantic, fluid shapes of Art Nouveau, the versatile plates are well-sized for everything from a starter course, final salad or cheese course to dessert or bread and butter. Particularly striking within a layered tablescape, the set coordinates beautifully with both contemporary stoneware and classic china patterns alike.
Stamped on the underside, 'Porcelaine Opaque de Gien' and 'Ceramanique,' these terms refer to a refined, dense white ironstone or fine earthenware developed in France to mimic porcelain while remaining opaque, rather than a translucent hard-paste porcelain. Whether framing a sweet slice of pie or serving as an artistic backdrop for a hearty salad of mixed greens, dried cranberries, pecans and goat cheese, these darling plates are sure to bring their simple, modern charms to your table in every season.
