Vintage Silverplate London Casino Teapot

Vintage Silverplate London Casino Teapot

$225.00

From one of the most glamorous jazz-age clubs of London, we are pleased to offer this handsome teapot produced for The London Casino. Interestingly, The London Casino never operated as a casino, but offered a "sumptuous" restaurant, dancing to the "finest orchestras in the Land" and continental theatrical productions that were "the most lavish ever staged in this country".

Housed in the former Prince Edward Theatre on Old Compton Street, just off Cambridge Circus, The London Casino opened in 1936 with a lavish production of the Folie Parisiennes revue which had just finished a popular run in New York and Miami the previous year. Theater critics from the time, declared that The London Casino was ‘one of the smartest and most popular resorts of London’s night life’ with perfect cuisine, immaculate service and two first-rate orchestras to complete the evening.

Despite its popularity, The London Casino could not compete with the austerity of World War II, and closed its doors in 1940, becoming part of the lost history of the city. Precious little remains, save rare mementos like this gleaming teapot, that once was used in service at The London Casino.

Produced by Britain's venerable Elkington Silversmiths for the Grand Opening of The London Casino, the pot is date code stamped 1936. Sure to be a favored addition to your collection, this delightful pot features a tea strainer integrated into the its lid and is bottom-stamped, The London Casino.

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good restored condition. 7 5/8" x 5 3/8". 1 1/2 pint capacity.
