Founded in 1918, the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom is the oldest independent air force in the world. As the First World War continued, the RAF was formed through the merger of the British Army's Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, creating a powerful new military service dedicated to aviation.

Just over two decades later, the Royal Air Force faced one of its greatest tests during World War II in the Battle of Britain. From July through October 1940, RAF pilots and their supporting crews defended the skies over Britain against the German Luftwaffe in a relentless campaign that would become a crucial turning point in the war. Their courage, determination and skill helped prevent Germany from gaining the air superiority necessary for its planned invasion of Britain.

Describing the heroism of the Royal Air Force during that epic battle, Winston Churchill declared, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
