Vintage Silverplate Grand Central Hotel Soup Cup

Vintage Silverplate Grand Central Hotel Soup Cup

From Belfast, Ireland's most prestigious and elegant hotel, this gorgeous Vintage Silverplate Soup Cup was produced for the glorious, now-shuttered Grand Central Hotel.

Once located on Royal Avenue in the center of downtown Belfast, the Grand Central was a 200-room luxury hotel which first opened its doors in 1893.  It quickly became the "social hub of Belfast" and over the years welcomed many illustrious guests including Belgium's King Leopold III, Sir Winston Churchill, Gene Autry, Bob Hope, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones.  The Rolling Stone's presence in the hotel in the mid-1960s nearly started a riot as hundreds of fans gathered on the street below to catch a glimpse of the band members.

In 1972, this once-glorious hotel was taken over by the British Army and used as a central post from which to patrol the city center during the height of the Northern Ireland conflict. The former hotel's bridal suite served as the Army's operational center for over ten years.  In the late 1980s, when the hotel was no longer needed as an Army base, the building was sold to a developer who demolished it to build a shopping center.

Produced by Britain's venerable Elkington Silversmiths, the soup cup is date code stamped with its 1953 year of manufacture.  It is in excellent condition and bears the regal crest of The Grand Central Hotel Belfast Ltd.  A wonderful piece from a grand and glorious hotel, it is sure to be a welcomed addition to your hotel silver collection.

Strictly limited quantities (a total of 4 cups are available) and subject to prior sale. 4 1/2" x 2".

Learn More about Hotel Silver

Once found in Grand Hotels, chic cafés, elegant restaurants as well as luxury steamships and the dining cars of the great locomotives, vintage hotel silver beautifully evokes the Golden Age of Travel. Enduringly crafted using sturdy nickel silver as its base metal and coated with a thick plating of pure, gleaming silver, vintage hotel silver is unmistakeable for its simple, classic lines and its pleasing heft. Often crested with the name of the establishment, the pieces bear the gentle, lovely patina often referred to as a “butler’s finish”.

Produced by the great silversmiths here in the United States, as well as those in Britain and on the Continent, most hotel silver dates from the 1920s to the 1940s. Prized for its perfect blend of form and function, hotel silver was made to withstand the rigors of daily use. Highly collectible, vintage hotel silver is a wonderful addition to any home.

Evoking the days of elegant travel, there are many new ways that hotel silver can be enjoyed. A milk pitcher or sugar basin makes an elegant vase for flowers or fresh herbs on the kitchen counter. A collection of oval platters adds sparkle and depth in a hutch when not being called into service for a buffet or dinner party. A toast rack becomes the perfect way to display photographs, hold fingertip towels in a powder room or organize mail in the office. Mix and match cutlery brings a relaxed sophistication and elegance to any tablescape. Whatever the piece, vintage hotel silver is sure to stir memories not only of your own travels, but of exotic destinations and ports of call from parts unknown.
