Vintage Christofle Silverplate Ocean Liner Covered Tureen - CCN Lisboa

Vintage Christofle Silverplate Ocean Liner Covered Tureen - CCN Lisboa

$395.00

Established in 1922 to serve the overseas colonies of Portugal, the Companhia Colonial de Navegação (Colonial Navigation Company, or CCN) was also known as The Portuguese Line and offered cargo and luxury transatlantic passenger service between Portugal and Africa as well as North, Central and South America.  Given Portugal's neutrality during World War II, theirs were some of the few ships able to safely offer transatlantic service.

In the grand tradition of the great ocean liners, service aboard The Portuguese Line ships was elegant and sophisticated. Offering the very best in food, wine and amenities, the service aboard the ships showcased the culinary traditions of not only Portugal, but also classic French cuisine.

The Portuguese Line ships proudly sailed until February 1974 when they merged with another shipping company to form The Portuguese Company of Maritime Transport.  That company stopped operating in the mid-1980s.

Found at market outside of Paris, a magnificent Vintage Silverplate Covered Tureen produced by France's premier silversmiths, Christofle, for exclusive use aboard The Portuguese Line ocean liners.  Both the lid and the tureen are side-marked with the logo of the Companhia Colonial de Navegação: a ship's wheel with the company's house flag in its center, both bearing the initials C.C.N.  At the bottom of the ship's wheel is the name of company's home port, Lisboa. (Lisbon)

Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good original condition with only a very small dent in the lid as seen in the alternate images. 15" x 12 3/8" x 8 1/2".

Learn More about Hotel Silver

Once found in Grand Hotels, chic cafés, elegant restaurants as well as luxury steamships and the dining cars of the great locomotives, vintage hotel silver beautifully evokes the Golden Age of Travel. Enduringly crafted using sturdy nickel silver as its base metal and coated with a thick plating of pure, gleaming silver, vintage hotel silver is unmistakeable for its simple, classic lines and its pleasing heft. Often crested with the name of the establishment, the pieces bear the gentle, lovely patina often referred to as a “butler’s finish”.

Produced by the great silversmiths here in the United States, as well as those in Britain and on the Continent, most hotel silver dates from the 1920s to the 1940s. Prized for its perfect blend of form and function, hotel silver was made to withstand the rigors of daily use. Highly collectible, vintage hotel silver is a wonderful addition to any home.

Evoking the days of elegant travel, there are many new ways that hotel silver can be enjoyed. A milk pitcher or sugar basin makes an elegant vase for flowers or fresh herbs on the kitchen counter. A collection of oval platters adds sparkle and depth in a hutch when not being called into service for a buffet or dinner party. A toast rack becomes the perfect way to display photographs, hold fingertip towels in a powder room or organize mail in the office. Mix and match cutlery brings a relaxed sophistication and elegance to any tablescape. Whatever the piece, vintage hotel silver is sure to stir memories not only of your own travels, but of exotic destinations and ports of call from parts unknown.
