Learn More About Quinquina Rouge Royal

In the early-1800s, with the discovery of the medical benefits of quinine (in French, Quinquina), numerous tonics, potions and beverages containing quinine swept Western Europe. Quinine was found to cure malaria and the cinchona bark which was used to make quinine quickly became the most valuable commodity shipped from South America to Europe.  As the bark was extremely bitter, it was originally mixed with sugar water to make it palatable. This sweetened mixture would eventually become tonic water.

In addition, countless brands of aperitifs that also contained quinine appeared beginning in the mid-1800s through the early 20th century. Developed by the French liqueuriste, Henri David located in the city of Le Mans, Quinquina Rouge Royal was just one such aperitif brand that capitalized on the quinine craze, adding a small amount of quinine to their raspberry liqueur.
