Found at market in France and hand-painted with the charming, colorful glazes that have made art majolica beloved for almost two centuries, we are thrilled to have found this dramatic Antique Majolica Asparagus Platter. With prominent stalks of noble asparagus depicted in dimensional relief across the center, the platter's gorgeous, earthy aesthetic and lush details are further enhanced by gracefully decorated handles at either end for ease in transport to the table.
First appearing in 1851 at the Great Exhibition in London, majolica became an exciting addition to Victorian décor with its rich colors and dimensional renderings of plant and animal motifs. By the time majolica ware was exhibited four years later at Paris' 1855 World's Fair, it had taken both Europe and the Americas by storm. Fashionable consumers on both sides of the Atlantic fell in love with its whimsical and often pastoral designs, exuberant color palettes and fine detailing. An enduring fascination with majolica continues today, captivating the imagination of each generation anew.
Dreamy hues of dusty teal blue and straw yellow along with accents of aubergine and leafy green highlight the artful rendering of pale, creamy asparagus resting across the romantic platter's surface. Sure to make a memorable presentation, serving every tender spear in elegant style, this magnificent serving piece promises to become a coveted addition to any majolica collection.
